Ashes to Beauty is a ministry in the city of Reading, that helps to provide a meal to the homeless and those in extreme poverty. Each time they gather, each person not only receives physical food but also spiritual food. The Gospel message is given each time they gather.
We provide the meal for Ashes to Beauty once every three months. The date and menu are posted to the MCC Church Friends Facebook page. During these meals, we also provide care kits.
If you would like to support this ministry:
1.) Cook or provide food for the meal.
2.) Serve the meal during the outreach.
3.) Donate items for the care kits.
4.) Serve by packing the donated care kit items, or writing notes of encouragement to include.
Care Kits Include:
A. Socks. Homeless men and women spend a lot of time on their feet trying to get to resources and appointments. A fresh pair of clean, dry socks can feel like heaven on tired, soggy feet. Throwing in some bandaids helps to ease the pain of blisters.
B. Snacks and Water. Throw in some individually packed nuts, crackers, dried fruit, trail mix, granola bars, breakfast bars, or other light weight and quick snacks. Water aids in prevention of dehydration.
C. Hygiene Items. Add anti-bacterial lotion for when soap and water are not available. Include small soaps and shampoos from hotel stays. Consider lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrush, wash cloth, comb, razor, shaving cream, or deodorant. Avoid mouth wash and hand sanitizer that contains alcohol.
D. Resource Guide and Encouragement. We will include a small pamphlet that includes addresses and times of local soup kitchens, information for shelters, and a note of encouragement.
